Addiction is the psychological and behavioral impulses characterized by cravings, compulsion, and the inability to stop using despite negative consequences.

Substance addictions include alcohol, tobacco, opioids (painkillers or heroin), prescription drugs (such as anti-anxiety medications or sleeping pills), marijuana, cocaine, inhalants, and other substances. Each addiction has a different set of symptoms and effects on the body and each addiction has different options for treatment.

Signs of addiction include: taking a substance more often and in higher quantities than intended, a desire to reduce use without success, feeling increased cravings for the substance, reduced performance at work, home or school, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms after reducing use.

At Perrone Hormones and Weight Loss Center we specialize in the treatment and recovery of opioids (heroin or painkillers).

We stress the fact that Addiction is a chronic brain disease that has changed the structure and functioning of the brain, affecting a person’s judgment, decision-making, reaction to stress, memory, ability to learn and behavioral control. Therefore, we prescribe appropriate medications but we also act with compassion, encouragement and positivity in order to motivate people to seek help and have the resolution to stay in treatment.

Our clinic uses both Suboxone (Buprenorphine + Naloxone) and Subutex (Buprenorphine).

Suboxone is an oral film prescribed to treat dependence on opioid drugs. It works by reducing withdrawal symptoms when stopping opioids for an extended period of time. It can be placed under the tongue or between your gums and cheek, where it dissolves in your mouth.

Suboxone contains two ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone.

Buprenorphine has some of the same effects as opioid drugs, but it also blocks other effects of opioids. Because of these unique effects, it’s called an opioid partial agonist-antagonist.Buprenorphine is the part of Suboxone that helps treat opioid drug dependence. It does this by reducing withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings. And because it’s an opioid partial agonist-antagonist, it’s less likely to cause a high than an opioid.

Naloxone is included in Suboxone solely to help prevent misuse of the medication. (Misuse refers to taking a drug in a way other than how it’s prescribed.) Naloxone is classified as an opioid antagonist. This means it blocks the effects of opioid drugs.

If you’re dependent on opioids and inject Suboxone, the naloxone can cause dangerous withdrawal symptoms. This is because it blocks the effects of opioids, putting you into immediate withdrawal.

However, this withdrawal is less likely to occur when you use the Suboxone film. This is because the film releases less naloxone into your body than an injection does.
